While you wait
What to do right now.
- 01
Shut off water to any running fixture
Toilet shut-off valve (under the tank), sink shut-off valves (under the cabinet). Every gallon that goes down adds to the backup.
- 02
Don't flush. Don't run water.
No sinks, no laundry, no dishwasher. If someone needs the bathroom, use a different fixture upstairs or wait if possible.
- 03
Keep kids, pets, and anyone with cuts out of the area
Raw sewage carries bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella). Short-term adult exposure usually isn't dangerous, but keep vulnerable people and animals clear.
- 04
Move valuables off the basement floor
Rugs, electronics, boxes, anything porous. Water damage spreads fast; air circulation (open a window, run a fan toward it) slows it.
- 05
Text us photos — same number
Pictures of the backup, the floor drain, the toilet, the exterior cleanout, and the sewer cleanout access point help us bring the right nozzle and know what we're walking into.
- 06
Do NOT pour chemical drain cleaner down
It does nothing against a backed-up sewer main, and it burns skin and splashes from the cable when the plumber arrives. If you already poured some, tell us at the door.
What's probably happening
Four common causes of a basement sewer backup in Omaha.
Most common
Clogged sewer main
Grease buildup, tree roots at a joint, foreign objects (wipes, feminine products), or decades of debris. Jetter with the right nozzle clears it. Camera scope confirms it's gone.
Common on older homes
Cast iron scale
Homes built 1945–1975 across Omaha, Benson, Dundee, Field Club, Bemis Park, Ralston often have cast iron sewer mains narrowed to the point one small clog causes a full backup. Needs chain-knocker descaling, not just a cable.
Less common, more serious
Broken or collapsed sewer main
Soil shift, root intrusion over decades, or old pipe (clay, Orangeburg) failing. The camera scope at the start of the job tells us immediately. If it's structural, we tell you. We don't jet damaged pipe.
Rare but possible
City main backup
The sewer main at the street, not your line. The city handles it (not us), but we camera your side first to confirm the issue isn't yours. If it points to the city line, we help you make the call.
When we arrive
Four steps. The jetter runs on confirmed sound pipe only.
- 01
Upfront estimate before any tool runs
Standard hydro jet rate ($300/hr) plus the disclosed after-hours service-call premium. You know the numbers before we open the truck. Camera scope included at no additional charge.
- 02
Camera scope the line first
HD push camera through your cleanout to find exactly where the backup is and what's causing it. You see it on the monitor with us. If the pipe is structurally damaged (crack, bellied, collapsed), we tell you before we jet.
- 03
Hydro jet the line clear
3,500 PSI through the correct nozzle for whatever's blocking the line: root cutter for roots, penetrator for grease, flush pattern for soft blockages. Most residential sewer jet jobs wrap in about 2 hours.
- 04
Camera-verify + itemized invoice
Second camera pass confirms the line runs clear. We walk you through it on the monitor. Recording available on request. Itemized invoice before we leave.
A real emergency call
"I had a serious problem in my basement because water from the main sewer drain was backing up into the basement due to a blockage in the main line. I called Jeff, and to my surprise, he arrived at my property in less than 10 minutes and immediately got to work. He used specialized equipment to unclog and thoroughly clean the sewer line, including high-pressure water and a camera to inspect the inside of the pipe. Thank you, Jeff, for your excellent work, dedication, and professionalism."

Sewer backup FAQs
01 What should I do if my basement is flooding with sewage?
Three immediate actions. (1) Shut off water to any fixture that's actively running (toilet shut-off under the tank, sink shut-off under the cabinet) and stop flushing. Every gallon that goes down adds to the backup. (2) Keep kids, pets, and anyone with cuts or weakened immune systems out of the affected area. Raw sewage carries bacteria. (3) Call us. 24/7. We'll triage the problem on the phone, give you an arrival window, and tell you what to do while we drive. Don't try to snake it yourself. A cable won't clear a backed-up sewer main, and running water through a clog pushes it further down.
02 How much does an emergency sewer backup call cost in Omaha?
Our standard hydro jet rate ($300/hr, billed hourly) stays the same day or night across the Omaha metro and Sarpy County. There's no "emergency rate" markup on the hourly. For after-hours, weekend, or holiday calls, a flat service-call premium applies. We tell you the exact dollar amount on the phone before we dispatch, so you can decide. Typical residential sewer jet runs about 2 hours ($600 typical range). The before + after camera scope is included at no additional charge.
03 Is sewage in my basement dangerous?
Yes. Raw sewage contains bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella), viruses, and parasites. Short-term exposure to small amounts generally won't hurt a healthy adult, but any extended contact, open cuts, or breathing in aerosolized droplets is a real health concern. Keep children, pets, and anyone immunocompromised out of the affected area. Ventilate the room if you can (open a window, run a fan toward an open window). Don't walk through standing sewage without rubber boots. For large-volume backups, call water-damage restoration separately once the drain is cleared. Insurance may cover their work.
04 How fast can you get here for a sewer backup?
During business hours (Mon–Sat, 7a–7p), typically 60–90 minutes across the Omaha metro and Sarpy County. After hours and overnight: usually 90–120 minutes depending on where you are and what truck is closest. We give you a realistic arrival window when you call. No fake-fast promises. Property managers and commercial accounts with recurring schedules get priority routing.
05 What causes a sewer line to back up into the basement?
Four common causes in the Omaha metro. (1) Clogged sewer main from grease buildup, tree roots at a joint, foreign objects (wipes, feminine products), or decades of debris. Most common. (2) Cast iron scale narrowing the pipe to the point one small clog creates a full backup. Common in homes built 1945–1975. (3) Broken, bellied, or collapsed sewer main. The camera scope at the start of the job tells us if this is what you have. (4) Rare but possible: city main backing up (sewer main at the street), in which case the city handles the fix and we'll help you confirm.
06 Will my homeowners insurance cover a sewer backup?
Only if you have a sewer backup rider. Standard homeowners insurance usually does NOT cover sewer backup or sump pump failure by default. Check your policy or call your agent. If you do have the rider, insurance typically covers water damage cleanup and property damage, not the drain cleaning itself (that's maintenance). We give you an itemized invoice you can submit, and if the camera scope shows the issue (which it will, included on every jet job), you can request the recording to attach as documentation.
07 Can I pour chemical drain cleaner down to try to clear it myself?
No. For a backed-up sewer main, chemical drain cleaner does nothing useful and creates a hazard for the plumber who shows up (caustic chemicals burn skin and splash from the cable). Save the money and the risk. Chemical cleaners are already weak against grease and useless against roots, scale, or structural damage, which cover 95% of sewer backups. If you've already poured some in before realizing, tell us at the door so we can handle it safely.
08 Should I call the city or a plumber first?
Plumber first, in almost all cases. The clog is 99% likely to be on your side of the city tap (between your house and the street), and the city won't investigate until a licensed plumber confirms the issue isn't in the homeowner's line. If the camera scope on your side comes back clear and water is still backing up, THAT's when you call Omaha Public Works (402-444-5464 for metro). We'll help you make that call if the scope points there.
